Communications and Outreach Coordinator
The Save California Salmon Communications and Outreach Coordinator will lead the development, publication, and editing of outward-facing organizational communications under the direction of the Executive Director and support communities’ communications needs. Primary duties will include creating press releases, social media, website content, fundraising assets, and copy for newsletter. The position will support the Executive Director with grant proposal and report writing, outreach, and event planning, edit other team members’ outward-facing written materials, and support campaign management and framing. While not required, graphic design and/or artistic skills and the ability to train others are also a major plus. Tribal preference applies.
Reports to: Executive Director
Location: Humboldt or Sacramento County. Remote, hybrid, or office setting options. Some travel for events and meetings is required.
Salary: $28-33 per hour depending on experience. Health benefits for full time.

Required Qualifications:
​

Expertise in content creation and drafting of media content, press releases, etc.
-
Proficiency with Google Suite and computer technology in general.
-
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
-
Strong proofreading skills.
-
Experience with organizing campaigns, public events, and rallies.
-
High level of creativity, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Experience working with Tribes, Tribal organizations and people.
-
Experience creating trainings and teaching communication and organizing skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience managing and reporting on grants.

Strong web and graphic design skills.
-
Event and campaign organizing and management.
SCS may be willing to train the right candidate if they lack one or more of the above listed qualifications.

Job Responsibilities:
Writing - Approx. 60% of time
-
Lead creation and publication of monthly online California Salmon News, quarterly Water Justice newsletter, and annual report
-
Lead online content writing and posting
-
Help the ED write grants, grant reports, and other supporter fundraising appeals and communications
-
Write for and help organize stories for the California Water Justice Newsletter
-
Lead in drafting and circulation of media content (press releases, op-eds, outreach materials) with ED
-
Edit others’ writing (articles, grant applications, comments, etc.)

Manage website content

Exercise good judgment on content creation and consult with ED and/or Staff Attorney on all sensitive publications
Other Communications - Approx. 20% of time

Write and update an annual communications strategy plan and budget
-
Become proficient on all organizational programs and projects in order to compellingly communicate about them with the public

Oversee social media content creation and publication to ensure quality, focus, and accuracy

Manage and grow press contact information

Cultivate media relationships for more in depth reporting

Support in-person engagement (tabling, etc.) with the development of quality visual materials and fundraising tools

Organize interviews and speaking engagements with staff

Organize public communications related events with staff
Program and Admin Support - 20% of time

Support the education and policy teams with editing and content creation

Manage media contracts and staff
-
Ensure that the Communications Strategy aligns with organizational development and program goals

Coordinate and/or support youth programs and events
Professional Development - Minimal time commitment

Stay current on media, social media, and fundraising trends and practice.

Attend safety and trauma informed trainings and/or other trainings as need is identified
-
Give media trainings to staff and close partners

Working Conditions:

Remote or hybrid work is possible if based close to one of our offices in Sacramento, Eureka or Orleans, California. Regular travel to Arcata, the Klamath River or Sacramento required for meetings, and clerical purposes. Working in office will be required at times. If working remotely, must have access to reliable internet.

Must be both self-motivated and a supportive team player.

Must also work well with children, co-workers, and community members.

Must be able to lift up to 20 pound boxes and drive for long periods of time.
