Who We Are
Save California Salmon began in 2017, and is a 501(c)(3) Indigenous-led non-profit organization formed in the aftermath of the devastating 2002 Klamath River fish kill, where federal water diversions led to the death of over 65,000 salmon. After decades of Indigenous activism, we are proud to have been part of the historic removal of dams on the Klamath River in 2024. Since then, salmon have returned to over 300 river miles, reopening access to 88% of their historic range. This success inspires our team of 13 to continue our work in advocating for healthy flowing water, salmon and people.
Mission Statement
Save California Salmon (SCS) works to restore and protect Pacific salmon, their watersheds, and the communities that depend on them. Through policy advocacy, education, creative expression, and grassroots organizing, SCS advances healthy rivers and fish populations, promotes sustainable water management, uplifts Indigenous Traditional Ecological Knowledge (ITEK), and expands opportunities for Indigenous peoples, youth, and historically underserved communities to participate in environmental stewardship. By fostering reciprocal relationships among people, salmon, and place, SCS supports long-term ecological resilience, cultural vitality, and community well-being.
