Youth Coordinator

Reports to: Education Director

 

Works from: Hybrid/Remote: Humboldt Bay region, Hoopa/Orleans (Preferred), Siskiyou County/Yreka region (Required to work a designated % office location)

 

Classification: Non-Exempt, Full-Time or Part-Time. Hybrid Remote/In-person

 

Salary: $25-$32 per hour depending on experience. Benefits available (FT only)

Job Purpose: 

​

The Youth Activities Coordinator (North Area) conducts and supports planning and coordination of SCS’s education and youth programming. Specifically she/he will facilitate and/or assist with facilitation of: TEK curriculum lesson plans, youth and/or cultural based events and activities; mentor youth interns; coordinate and implement youth advocacy programming/training; and partner with Tribes, NGOs, school districts, and other agencies providing youth education/services, after school activities, and summer SCS programming. 

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

 

1. Plan and coordinate events, field trips, activities and programs with schools, organizations and communities within the SCS service area, including but not limited to;

   1. Summer youth and/or culturally-inclusive events and activities

   2. Academic programing: such as after school programs, culture, language, and advocacy related clubs, etc.

   3. Data collection, evaluation, analysis and reporting on SCS events and activities

 

1. Facilitate and engage in policy advocacy trainings with youth, speak at public hearings, schools, and other Environmental Justice policy meetings & events as directed

 

1. Create and implement curriculum, educator trainings, and media outreach

   1. Help manage curriculum resources: Water Advocacy curriculum, TEK Science and Mgmt. curriculum

   2. Organize and facilitate educator trainings on SCS curriculum/materials

   3. Assist the SCS media team with e-news and printed media development and distribution

   4. Assist the SCS media team and Education director to create and write education event and activity media stories/posts

2. Manage and mentor youth interns:

   1. Review and oversee scheduling

   2. Review and oversee work plans

   3. Review and oversee projects

   4. Review and give input on final work products 

   5. Conduct surveys

 

1. Professional Development

   1. Stay current on best practices for working with Native youth and families

   2. Continue developing relationships with TEK practitioners and others who support our education program

   3. Attend safety and trauma informed trainings as well as other trainings as identified by SCS

 

Requirements:

1. Must have Bachelors degree or its equivalent and 4 years of experience in social work, counseling, education, or similar field.

 

1. Must have proficiency with computer literacy, including Zoom.

 

1. Must possess valid driver’s license.

 

1. Must maintain valid California Driver’s license, CPR/First Aid certification, and compliance with SCS Youth Protection protocols.

1. Ability to work effectively with Native American communities in culturally diverse environments

 

1. Ability to work well with kids, co-workers and community members

 

1. Must be available for occasional travel for day and overnight stays

 

1. Exhibits the ability to manage time well and work under stressful conditions with a professional temperament.

Save California Salmon (SCS) is dedicated to policy change and community advocacy for Northern California’s salmon and fish dependent people. We support the fisheries and water protection work of our local communities, and advocate effective policy change for clean water, restored fisheries and vibrant communities. We aim to support Tribes and the general public in engaging in public discourse related to water pollution, fisheries, and beneficial use issues. Our team is primarily based in the greater Klamath, Sacramento, and Eel River watersheds.
